Email Attachments to be Blocked

 

This is a list of executable file extensions, macro files or registry settings files under Windows.  Files with these extensions could contain viruses or instructions to perform undesirable actions on a computer, and therefore should be blocked when attached to an email.  Very few users have a need to exchange files with these extensions via email.

 

This list purposely does not contain DOC, WPD, WKS, and XLS files, as most offices have a legitimate need to exchange files with these extensions.  However, these files could contain macro type viruses and users must still be careful.  RTF, ASC, CSV and TXT files are just plain text files, and by themselves are usually harmless.

 

Files with a ZIP extension are a common way to mail large files or multiple files between users, and could contain files with any of the extensions below.  Users must know the source and contents of the ZIP file before extracting the contents onto their hard drives.

 

Blocking these files does not eliminate the need to run all email through a reputable anti-virus program.  All users should run either server based or workstation based anti-virus programs, using the latest virus signature files.
